Drilling Guidance and Training Notification

Date(s) & Time(s) July 16, 2020   ~  1:00 pm - 2:15 pm
Webinar Description The New Jersey Department of Educations Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning will host a webinar on Thursday, July 16, 2020, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

This is a reminder that, as previously communicated, due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline for annual submission of the Drill Assurance Statements for the 2019-2020 school year has been extended. Additional guidance for proper completion and submission of the statements will be forthcoming.

Schools are also to be made aware that, whereas no waiver was granted with regard to drilling during the ongoing health crisis, schools will continue to be required to adhere to the requirements of N.J.S.18A-41-1 (the Drill Law) during those months which schools remain open for instructional programs. During each such month, one security drill must be conducted. *It should be noted this applies to summer months.

The New Jersey Department of Education, Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning (OSPEP), will conduct a training webinar to provide guidance to school administrators and School Safety Specialists regarding drilling practices during the current health crisis. This guidance will assist schools in adhering to the requirements of the Drill Law, while also selecting and conducting drills which allow participants to follow current health guidelines concerning safe social distancing and other protocols currently recommended by the CDC and NJ Department of Health. The intent of this training is to support schools to help identify and implement those drilling practices which:

1) Satisfy the definition of a School Security Drill;
2) Can be safely conducted without compromising the health and safety of participants, and;
3) Can be conducted without modifications which would otherwise compromise best practices.

A representative from the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety will also provide an update regarding a Rule Relaxation currently in place that addresses fire drills, as well as to comment upon other temporary changes to inspection schedules of school facilities.

School Safety Specialists will receive 1 hour of credit toward their annual training requirement.
