Best Practices for Speech and Language Evaluations for Students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Date(s) & Time(s) August 15, 2023   ~  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Workshop Description This workshop is one in a series addressing best practices for child study teams when conducting evaluations Speech and Language evaluations for students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. Separate sessions will cover school psychological and educational evaluation.

During this session, an overview of hearing and the impact on language development, education, and access to test materials, regardless of the student?s mode of communication, will be discussed. Additionally, examples of test items with interpretation of results when considering the student?s hearing will be provided.

While best practice is for the evaluator to be knowledgeable about deafness and to be able to communicate directly with the student if they use sign language, this is not always possible given the limited number of professionals with this experience. There might be times that the Speech Language Pathologist needs to conduct the evaluation using an educational interpreter. Working with an educational interpreter during the evaluation process will also be reviewed.
