Expansion Techniques in American Sign Language

Expansion Techniques in American Sign Language

Date(s) & Time(s) July 11, 2023   ~  9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Workshop Description Presenter: William F. Ross III, M.S., Vice President for Hands Up Communications, primary author for the fifth edition of "You Want to Be an Interpreter?"

It is well known that American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English are significantly different languages. Due to such differences, interpreting from English to ASL necessitates that interpreters employ various expansion techniques to achieve message equivalency. Expansion techniques are utilized to create conceptually and culturally accurate interpretations that assure Deaf people receive a clear and comprehensible signed message. If interpreters are unfamiliar with expansion techniques, the resulting work will demonstrate unnatural phrasing, incorrect grammatical structures, and errors in production. Expansion techniques are naturally occurring language features found in American Sign Language. The goal of this workshop is to explore the various features by incorporating 3-4 specified expansion techniques into our work.
