Trauma Informed Education: PD in Childhood Trauma & Mental Health

Supporting students with mental health issues

Date(s) & Time(s) November 6, 2019   ~  8:00 am - 1:00 pm
Workshop Description The CGS Family Partnership, Inc. (Care Management Organization for Gloucester, Cumberland & Salem Counties) in collaboration with the Gloucester County Administrators of Special Education and the Gloucester County Office of Education presents Trauma Informed Education: PD in Childhood Trauma.

Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and its consequences will help adults to begin to understand the emotional, social and cognitive changes that children exposed to ACEs endure. Howard Glasser, the founder of the approach, describes the NHA as a tool for helping adults to use their intensity as fuel to successfully and positively lead children to their greatness and not as a deficit or handicap. Children who experience trauma that triggers a toxic stress response are more likely to develop chronic conditions like hypertension, coronary artery disease and asthma that can lead to a shorter life expectancy. A 2007 study shows, about two-thirds of children in the U.S. have experienced at least one major traumatic event in their lives, and one-third have experienced two or more. Childhood trauma can disrupt a child's normal development and lead to physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and social problems. Left untreated, trauma can lead to a lifetime of struggles and early death. ACEs and traumatic stress presentation will discuss the neurobiological impact of ACEs and the consequences of health risk behaviors that follows.

The Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) is an evidenced based intervention and was originally developed for working with the most challenging children to awaken their talents, skills and greatness. So rather than acting out negatively, children begin to act out their greatness while the adults experience the joy of being highly effective change agents in the lives of the children. It is also a preventive tool against bullying of all kinds. NHA emphasizes clarity of expectations and provides structure that helps children feel safe. Through its 3 strands (principles), NHA provides the language and sets of intentions to proactively create opportunities for children to own the truth of their greatness and experience real internalized successes through positive relationships with caring adults. The long-term benefits of NHA are improvement in school performance and behaviors; building families and school culture on authentic connections and trust reduction in reliance on psychiatric medications to control behaviors; and ending punitive cycles that reinforces negative behaviors. Short term results show there is improved school attendance and decreased school office referrals and expulsion.

Using Creative Informed Solutions helps to develop interventions in schools settings. This workshop will explore the use of the ALSUP and Plan B in helping school staff to develop interventions for students in the classroom. Participants will learn to use the ALSUP to identify lagging skills and how to have a Plan B conversation with students to help generate interventions for common classroom difficulties. Implementation into 504 and IEP will be discussed. .

To become trauma informed in order to better serve those who endured childhood trauma, behavioral health service agencies, parents, teachers and all caregivers to children and youths must understand key principles of trauma informed approach. The six key principles are: safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and mutuality; empowerment. voice and choice; cultural, historical and gender issues will be addressed in this introductory Training/Seminar. The conference is designed to provide trauma awareness and trauma responsiveness as a public health prevention strategy.
