National Safe Schools Week Morning Session

Workshop Description As school security and safety has become the most important work of our time, these lectures will provide attendees with unique insight and awareness of tragic events such school shootings and recovering from such unforeseen disasters.

The Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning welcomes Kristina Anderson and Lisa Athan to present best practices, lessons learned and recovering from tragic school events. As these are nationally recognized presenters, this is a presentation not to be missed.

Our Presenters

Kristina Anderson was one of the most critically injured students in the Virginia Tech tragedy in 2007. She will share her personal story of the active shooter incident, best practices in preparedness and prevention, and lessons learned from her unique perspective as a survivor. She is a dedicated resource for local communities, school administrators, teachers and students in violence prevention and personal safety awareness, promoting joint training between citizens, educators, law enforcement, emergency managers, and first responders.

Lisa Athan is the founder and executive director of New Jersey based Grief Speaks, will present on healthy coping and healing strategies after tragedy. Her powerful message of hope, healing and thriving through loss, transition and adversity are shared from her heart, from her own personal stories of resiliency, and from those experiences of people who have risen above their own difficult circumstances to lead healthy and satisfying lives.

Chief school administrators, public and nonpublic school administrators, charter school lead persons, Renaissance School Project Lead Persons, directors, buildings and grounds personnel, school security personnel, school resource officers, first responders, and all school personnel.
