Workshop Description
The New Jersey Department of Education, in partnership with the Jersey City/Newark Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI), is pleased to present School Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) training designed to prevent active shooter incidents and other targeted violence in our schools and school districts.
This full-day advanced course reviews best practice procedures in school-based behavioral threat assessment and management. The training provides participants with opportunities to put threat assessment procedures into practice through multiple tabletop exercises. The course will enhance knowledge of threat assessment and threat management skills through discussion of complex case studies and group exercises.
The training covers the following topics:
- Review of facts about targeted violence in schools, including recent US Secret Service and FBI research
- Review of best-practice procedures for threat assessment & threat management
- Planning and conducting interviews in threat assessment cases
- Case studies of targeted violence and averted incidents
- Strategies for Interviewing in threat assessment cases
- Common problems and solutions
- Multiple tabletop exercises that allow participants to practice using threat assessment procedures, following cases from the initial report to threat management intervention strategies
- Interaction with instructors throughout the class
The training is appropriate for personnel from any of the following:
- School district leadership, administrators, and school principals
- School Safety Specialists
- School psychologists, counselors, and social workers
- School staff members
- Special education personnel
- School resource officers and law enforcement officials
Please Note: This advanced trainings is designed specifically for school-based Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) team members and school employees who have previously completed a foundational basic BTAM training. Registration must be completed using a valid school-issued email address. Individuals who are not properly registered with a valid school email address will not be admitted into the training.
There is no fee to attend this presentation, however, seating is very limited and registration is required.
School Safety Specialists who complete this training will receive appropriate hours toward recertification.
