Ignorance Isn't Bliss: Equity Implications for Educational Interpreter Supervision

Date(s) & Time(s) February 3, 2024   ~  11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Webinar Description In May 2023, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and National Association of Interpreters in Education released a joint statement on the Perez v. Sturgis County Schools ruling wherein the court found a Deaf student was denied qualified interpreters. Using an educational equity lens, Dr. Whitney presents research on interpreter supervision (Weirick, 2021a and 2021b) and why it matters for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Supervision has positive or negative impacts depending on a range of factors. Interpreters can be passive participants in systems that marginalize DHH students or agents for transformative change to uphold students' rights.

Presenter: Whitney Renee Weirick, Ph.D., NIC-Advanced
