Equity in Gifted Student Identification

Virtual Technical Assistance Session

Webinar Description The Office of Supplemental Educational Programs will be hosting a virtual technical assistance (TA) session that provides participants with guidance and best practices for identifying gifted and talented students.

Presenters will focus on the equitable identification of traditionally underserved student populations in gifted education including, but not limited to, students of color; multilingual students, students with disabilities, and students from low-income backgrounds.

Dr. Jonathan Plucker, Julian Stanley Professor of Talent Development, Johns Hopkins University and immediate Past-President of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC)
Dr. Jill McLaughlin, Director of Elementary Education, Montclair Public Schools
Marcos Vargas, Director of Humanities, Montclair Public Schools
Elaine Chesebro, Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Advisory Committee (SGTEAC)
Jennifer Madsen, Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Advisory Committee (SGTEAC)

Dr. Lenore Cortina has been involved in gifted education for over 30 years as a parent, general education teacher, gifted education specialist, professional developer, advocate, and in higher education. As the retired Faculty Director for the Rutgers Gifted Certificate Program, Dr. Cortina is an expert in gifted programming, curriculum evaluation, design and development, and professional learning for educators.

Dr. Jonathan Plucker is the Julian Stanley Professor of Talent Development at Johns Hopkins University. His work defining and studying the excellence gap is part of a larger effort to re-orient the thinking of policymakers and educators toward how to best promote success and high achievement for all children.
