The Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool (TPOT) is an instrument designed to measure implementation of teaching and behavior support practices associated with the Pyramid Model for promoting social-emotional competence in young children. Implementation of the preschool Pyramid Model and the TPOT observation tool will improve teacher classroom practice in teaching developmentally appropriate social and emotional skills and reduce persistent challenging behaviors in preschool children.
Prerequisites for Participants:
1) TPOT Manual and score sheet to bring to training:
2) Previous training on the Preschool Pyramid Model modules 1, 2, 3a, 3b: http://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/resources/training_preschool.html
TPOT Reliability training involves a general overview of the TPOT tool structure and organization of items and indicators, reviewing key teaching practice items, associated indicators, red flags, and observed incidents of challenging behaviors and responses to these incidents, practice scoring observation items using video clips, reviewing gold-standard scoring and discuss scoring clarifications, In addition, trainees will learn how to observe or listen to interview responses using video clips, take notes, and use the scoring rules to help inform scoring decisions. This training also includes a "check-out" video and scores TPOT using scoring sheet and manual.
At the end of the training all trainees who meet inter-rater agreement standards will receive a TPOT Certificate of Reliability along with professional development hours.
This training is intended for district Preschool Intervention and Referral Team (PIRT) specialists, Head Start Mental Health Coordinators, or other roles that actively coach teachers on the Pyramid Model.
