The Amistad Commission is proud to present the Fifth Annual Southern Region Summer Curriculum Institute, entitled "Civil Rights and the Schoolhouse - A Historiography of American Educational Policy Implications on Students and Teachers."

The 2018 curriculum institute will be a four (4) day residential program that gives educators access to prominent historians and scholars.

This year, using primary and secondary sources, the Summer Institute will examine the role of parental advocacy, the development of educational facilities, the evolution of curriculum development and educational policy, from the 19th century to present, aligned against the timeline of civil rights attainments in this nation.

History has taught us that change and equality are often won in the classroom. And, few things matter more to a community's well-being than the quality of its public education. As teacher-scholars, you
the study of the methods of historians in developing history as an academic discipline by extension the historiography of American education. You will be guided throughout by experts in the field and provided with a myriad of experiences to assist you in examining education through a variety of lenses. By the end of the four day period, you will be able to discern the long range impact of education in virtually every aspect of daily life and come to understand how and why education continues to be the civil rights issue of our time.

Moreover, you may earn professional-development credits and design valuable curriculum materials that help you to infuse the mandated curriculum into your lesson plans across curricular areas.

All Applicants must complete the Amistad application and essay and provide all of requested information. Acceptance is on a first come, first served basis.
