Workshop Description RAC-7 is pleased to partner with Mr. Michael Heinz, Science Coordinator, Office of Academics, at the New Jersey Department of Education to launch the Science Assessment Consortia Project. The New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-S) bring with them a need to develop local systems of assessment that provide ongoing information about student progress toward proficiency with the Performance Expectations. The local systems of assessment need to include three-dimensional formative, summative, and benchmark assessments. The Science Assessment Consortia Project focusses on developing teachers' capacity to craft and use a bank of three-dimensional items, tasks, and prompts.

The RAC-7 Science Assessment Consortia Project will focus on ESS1 Earth's Place in the Universe. The project will kick off with a three-day work session from August 1-3, 2017. The work will take place at the Gloucester County Fire Academy located at 200 Shady Lane Rd, Clarksboro, NJ 08020. Each day begins at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. There will be a one hour lunch break each day. Participants must commit to attending each day and to producing at least two assessment items, tasks, and prompts, and their accompanying rubrics, that are of sufficiently high quality to be shared with other educators.

The project is based on a recent National Academy Press book titled Seeing Students Learn Science: Integrating Assessment and Instruction in the Classroom (2017). The RAC 7 Cohort will focus on the following component ideas from the NJSLS-S: Core Idea ESS1: Earth's Place in the Universe:

ESS1.A: The Universe and Its Stars (taught in grades 1, 5, 6-8, and 9-12)
ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System (taught in grades 1, 5, 6-8, and 9-12)
ESS1.C: The History of Planet Earth (taught in grades 2, 4, 6-8, and 9-12)

The following are the Essential Questions for each day:

Day 1: (Tuesday 1 August 2017)
-To what extent do the NJSLS-S change how we assess students?
-What are the key components of an assessment system?
-How do we know if an assessment item or task is 3-Dimensional?
-What are the attributes of high quality assessment items and tasks?

Day 2: (Wednesday 2 August 2017)
-Does the item or task integrate grade appropriate elements of the science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas to make student thinking visible?

Day 3: (Thursday 3 August 2017)
-How do we score three dimensional assessments?
-What does a rubric look like for the different kinds of assessments?

Participants will need to bring the following:
-lap top computer (internet access will be provided)
-coffee/brown bag lunch (These will not be provided but there are refreshment/lunch options available in the local area.)
