Workshop Description The Amistad Summer Institute at Rowan University is one of two residential programs offered this summer for K-12 teachers and administrators to earn professional development credits in infusing African-American history into the K-12 social studies curriculum.

This year, using primary and secondary sources, the Summer Institute at Rowan examines the issues and legacy of lynching in America from 1866 to 1955, a period that corresponds with the Post-Reconstruction Era to the era of events that sparked an upsurge and intensification of civil rights activism and resistance. Against a judicial backdrop of the 14th and 15th Amendments and 20th century civil rights cases, the focus will expand to include the still evolving narrative of events surrounding Emmett Till's murder and its influence on American culture.

With an emphasis on social studies, the curriculum institute is designed to give educators access to prominent historians and scholars. All New Jersey public (district, charter and renaissance school) and nonpublic (parochial or private school) elementary or secondary teachers and other educators are eligible to participate.

The Commission encourages both administrators and teachers to apply for this free professional development opportunity.
