Later School Start Time Hearing

Public Hearing

Date(s) & Time(s) May 10, 2016   ~  4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Workshop Description The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) is charged with conducting a study on later start times for middle and high schools, pursuant to P.L. 2015, c. 96. The purpose of the study is to explore the issues, benefits, and options for instituting a later start time in schools. The Department will submit a report to the Governor and Legislature that details its findings and will offer a recommendation on the advisability of establishing a pilot program to test later school start times in interested middle and high schools. The NJDOE will be conducting meetings throughout the state to hear public testimony to gather information for its recommendation to the Governor and Legislature.

In a policy statement published online Aug. 25, 2014 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends middle and high schools delay the start of class to 8:30 a.m. or later.
